Niger State police command commences community policing program

 
The Nigeria Police Force, Niger State Command says it has commenced police-community policing programme in Minna metropolis.

The command’s new Public Relations Officer, ASP Bala Elkana, announced this in an interview with  Newsline Online afternoon an interactive session with the community around its “B”Division, Paikoro Road, Minna

ASP Elkana, who disclosed that 10 police stations are currently under police-community policing programme, said the programme was undergoing reactivation in oder to equip them with modern facilities for effective service delivery.

The new PPRO explained that the aim of introducing the police-community policing programme in the state is to bring police closer to the people and ensure the realisation of model police stations to meet international standard.

According to him, a number of policemen has already been trained on the  arts of effective police-community policing, adding that the programme will be extended to all police stations in the state.

Speaking earlier, the  Divisional Police Officer (DPO),”B” Division, Paikoro Road, Minna, CSP Osarolla O. Sunday, explained that his division has been transformed through the effort of the Justice For All (J4A) Programme of United Kingdom Department For International Development(DFID) funded programme as a result of the introduction of police-community programme, an effort which, he said,  was aimed at assisting the Nigeria justice sector.

He disclosed that the Nigeria Police Force has been working since October, 2013, with the Justice For All programme to provide better services to all in areas such as ways the police men on duty will receive visitors to their stations, support victims of crime, professionalising investigation, supporting human rights of all citizens, children, sexual violence and abuse etc, adding that the interactive session was to  bring into the consciousness of members of the public the activities happening in the police force. He said the efforts are all geared towards providing safe environment and good future for the community.

At end, members were taken round the police station and shown the facilities provided, which had transformed it into a model police station, with conducive cells, toilet, interview room, change room, human right unit, among others.
