Five leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party in Bayelsa State were on Friday abducted by gunmen suspected to be sea pirates barely 24 hours to the State Houses of Assembly election.

Saturday Independent gathered that the victims were the aides of the Deputy Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Victor Sam-Ateki.  The bandits were said to have attacked a passenger boat conveying them along the waterways of Brass, in  Brass Local Government Area of the state.

Other passenger boats plying the same route at the time of the pirates’ attack, including a boat conveying the state Chairman of the Nigerian Union Journalists (NUJ), Tarinyo Akono, escaped by  the whiskers due to quick information from a fisherwoman in the area.

The PDP leaders, who were said to be heading for Twon-Brass to participate in today’s House of Assembly elections in the state, were reportedly whisked away to an unknown destination. A boat passenger who escaped the attack, Tonye, said the sea pirates were heavily armed.
