Big Disgrace: Tottenham wallop Jose Mourinho's Chelsea 5-3
Not the start that Jose Mourinho would have demanded of his team going into the New Year as they were defeated 5-3 by Tottenham.
In a day that Manchester City closed the gap with them at the top of the Premier League table, having won their game against Sunderland, the onus was on Chelsea to respond.
However the outcome that was not anticipated as Chelsea were completely overwhelmed by the hosts, Spurs who took all the chances that they got.
The star of the night was Harry Kane who produced a virtuoso performance in a game that he was undoubtedly the man of the match.
Chelsea looked like they were going to be in control of the match when Diego Costa tapped in Oscar's effort, although he looked to be in an offside position.
It was then that Tottenham took control of proceedings and started dictating how the game eventually panned out.
Kane went on a brilliant run, taking on Chelsea players from midfield and drilling in a low shot from outside the box to level at 1-1.
The goal spurred Totteham and they added a second goal minutes to the end of the first half. Rose from a tight angle curled in a goal after the ball had bounced off the post.
And Spurs weren't finished as Kane won a penalty which Andros Townsend belted past Thibaut Courtois.
Mauricio Pochettino's team started the second half the way they ended the first and further stretched their lead.
Kane again, picked the ball at the edge of the box, making a spectacular turn and curling in the fourth goal.
Chelsea were stunned and didn't know what struck them as they looked vulnerable of conceding at every move by Spurs.
However a well worked goal from Chelsea inspired hope of a possible comeback.
Fazio gave away the ball in the box and Chelsea quickly capitalized with Cesc Fabregas cutting the ball for Eden Hazard to guide home for 4-2.
But the hopes were punctured after Spurs added a fifth goal through Nacer Chadli's effort that deflected off John Terry into the net.
Terry pulled in another goal for Chelsea but it was late for any comeback as they were condemned to a defeat at White Hart Lane.
Jose Mourinho would now be feeling the heat as City are now level with them and on the same goals difference.
