Female suicide bomber was responsible for the bomb blast that took at a mobile phone market in Azare, Bauchi State, resulting in the death of 13 persons with 65 others injured.
An eye witness in Azare town, in a phone interview with reporters, said the attack was carried out at a mobile phones market in the town.
The chief medical director, Federal Medical Centre, Azare, Dr. Abdullahi Ibrahim, confirmed in a phone interview that, “so far, 13 persons have died and 65 others injured in a bombing by two suicide bombers.”
The hospital’s spokesman, Dahiru Haruna Shira, while also confirming the bomb attack, said it occurred at about 5:15pm.
“Thirteen dead persons were brought to the hospital and 65 others were injured. We are still working on the details of both the dead and the injured,” Shira said, adding that “the GSM market attracts a lot of people as both new and fairly used mobile phones are sold there.”
This attack brings to three bombings in Azare town in the last three weeks.
Last week, a female suicide bomber targeted bank customers queuing at an automatic teller machine (ATM), killing over 20 persons. The week before that, another bomb attack was carried out on the town’s motor park, also killing dozens.
When reporters contacted the Bauchi State Police Command about the Azare Bomb Attack, it confirmed the suicide bombing and said the death toll was13 and 65 injured.
Police spokesman, Haruna Mohammed, in a statement made available to newsmen said, “On the 16/11/2014 at about 5:20pm,there was bomb explosion at Jagwal Market in Azare town. The scene was visited and cordoned off by police explosive ordnance disposal unit while casualties have been evacuated to the Federal Medical Centre, Azare, for medical attention.”
“So far,13 persons were confirmed dead while 65 others sustained various degrees of injuries, out of which 43 have been treated and discharged and 22 others are responding to treatment. One person identified as one of the insurgents was lynched to death by mob action.”
Mohammed added that normalcy had been restored to the area and that investigation was in progress.
