Katsina Governor Urges Supporters To Kill Opponents

Governor of Katsina State, Ibrahim Shema
The Governor of Katsina State, Ibrahim Shema has been accused of asking his supporters to kill their political opponents.
The governor appeared in a video where he likened members of opposition parties to cockroaches and asked the crowd what is usually done to cockroaches. They chorused “kill.”
The governor, who belongs to the Peoples Democratic Party, stated his achievements in the state before also telling his excited supporters to retaliate against anyone who fights them.

Shema was speaking in Hausa at what seemed to be a political rally. His statement has been likened to one which caused the Rwanda Genocide, in which 800,000 people were killed, after the majority Hutus described the minority Tutsis as “cockroaches”.

Read the full transcript of his speech below:

The PDP has made an impact on your lives and the lives of your families. You must have taken your child to the hospital to receive free treatment. You must have used the roads that the PDP has constructed.”

“Your children, whether in primary or secondary schools, have not paid any fees, even WAEC and NECO, since I became governor in 2007.”

“We should thank God for this.

“Other states have experienced a change in government since the inception of democracy but Katsina has been ruled by the PDP since 1999. They say that PDP could not do this or that, but Katsina state is PDP and we have done it.”

“Don’t worry about the cockroaches of politics. What do you do when you see cockroaches in your home?”

The crowd choruses “Kill it.”

The governor then says: “Crush them!”

“Mark my words, anyone that does anything against you, you must retaliate.”

“People have disrespected and humiliated the PDP and still expect us to be quiet about it. From now on, whoever does anything against you, you must fight back.”
