For the second time in two years, suspected members of the deadly Boko Haram sect on Sunday night invaded the Nigeria Prison yard in Koton-karfe, Kogi state, where they set free all the inmates serving various terms there.

Sources informed THISDAY that the insurgents stormed the prison around 10pm when most of the guards were not at their duty posts as most of them had gone home to pass the night when the incident occurred.

The sources said that most times, the prison guards lock up the inmates in their cells at night and go to their various homes, which are close to the prison yard, to sleep only to return in the morning to hand over to the next set of guards.

When THISDAY visited the prison yard, it was observed that the insurgents gained access by breaking the wall and moving to the record office where they burnt down all the inmates documents before they proceeded to the inmates cells where they also broke the wall to allow all the 145 inmates to escape.

THISDAY gathered that the prison was built in 1934 for only 50 inmates but as at the time the prison was attacked, it was holding 145 inmates out of which 119 were awaiting trial and only 26 were convicted prisoners.

Briefing Governor Idris Wada who paid an on the spot visit to the scene, the  state controller of prison, Mr. Omale Adams, explained that the incident occurred around 10pm when external forces invaded the prison and overpowered his men who were on duty, adding that in the process all the 145 inmates were set free by the insurgents.
