How US School Threatened To Arrest 7-Year-Old Nigerian Student
A US school in Connecticut has come under fire for banning a 7-year-old student from attending class over Ebola fears due to the fact that she had attended a wedding in Nigeria. Samuel Opayemi sued Meadowville Elementary in Milford after they ordered his daughter, Ikeoluwa out of school and even threatened to use force if necessary.
The family’s lawyer, Gary Phelan said in an interview:
"When you threaten to have the police remove a 7-year-old from school in front of all her classmates, that's when you do something like turn to an attorney, and that's what they did."
The Superintendent of the Milford Public Schools, Elizabeth Feser however defended the action saying that Ikeoluwa had to be kept out for the sake of public interest.
She said:
"In addressing this situation, at all times, my staff and I proceeded in good faith to respond to this public health issue,"
"We acted in the best interest of all of our students and staff."
Ikeoluwa’s parents are currently battling in court to get their daughter back in school after she was told not to return till November 3.
Nigeria recorded 20 cases of the disease and eight deaths before it was eventually declared Ebola-free on October 20.
