14-Year-Old Child Bride Goes Dumb At Murder Trial Where She Faces Death Sentence In Kano
The was considerable drama in the Gezawa High court in Kano on Thursday, October 30, 2014 after Wasila Tasi, the 14-year old girl alleged to have killed her husband and three others in April 2014 went dumb in court during as she was being tried.
Thisday reports that the teenager, who was looking unruffled refused to utter a word after her four-count charge of culpable homicide were read to her in her local dialect, including the death sentence it attracts under section 221 A of the penal code.
Her actions nearly stalled proceedings as the presiding judge, Justice Muhammad Yahaya had to enter a plea of “not-guilty” on her behalf.
Prosecution counsel, Lamido Abba Soron Dinki went on the call up five witnesses to prove the case had substance, seeking an adjournment so as to intimate his witnesses to testify.
Defense counsel, Hussaina Aliyu Ibrahim, who was given thirty minutes to discuss with her client to intimate her on the weight of the allegations against her agreed with the adjournment.
The case was therefore adjourned until Wednesday, November 26 and Thursday, November 27, 2014, ordering that the suspect be returned to remand home.
