Taiwo Okpongete is a Human Resources Professional with an Indigenous Oil Exploration and Production Company and a Certified Career Coach who believes that people, when armed with the correct and current knowledge, can be responsible enough to make the right decisions.

She said this during an interview with iCampus news Reporter, at House On The Rock, during the premiering event of the Internationally applauded movie, Selma, which chronicles the epic March from Selma to Montgomery in a nonviolent protest led by Martin Luther King Jr in 1965.

Taiwo said, “I believe in fostering non-violence in Nigeria, which is really the whole idea behind this movie, Selma.

“Just look at what happened in America. The civil right movement and how Martin Luther king Jr went about it in a non-violent manner, it will be good to create such movies especially now that Nigeria is preparing for elections. We need to encourage peace and non-violence.” she said.
When asked how she would promote non-violence as a Nigerian, in the circumstance where somebody slaps her across the face with no prompting provocation, she said…

“If somebody slaps me across the face? Our lord Jesus said that, ‘if somebody slaps you on the one cheek, turn the other side'; which literally means, don’t react. If that person wants me to react, I won’t. I would probably hold back and find out what the person wants.”

Taiwo pointed that she hoped to enjoy the movie, Selma, and that she was curious about what truly happened as accounted for by historians.

“I’m expecting watch a lovely movie and to find out what really happened in the 1960s” she said.
The career coach said that the reason why Nigerians are easily influenced by a few elites is because of lack of education and absence of quality knowledge adding that if Nigerians know enough, they would make better decisions.

“I think a huge part is the lack of information. A lot of our people are lacking information and they get brainwashed easily, that’s just what I realized. If people are able to arm themselves with knowledge; they would be able to make informed decisions and cast the right vote.

“They will tell you that Buhari is this and that Jonathan is that but when one digs history, you find something different. So, the quest for knowledge is key, people should go for it.” she summed.
She also encouraged Nigerians to pant after knowledge like the Deer, after water.
