Two human right activists are also being detained in the same police station in connection with the matter.
The station’s Divisional Police Officer, DPO, Mr.
Cosmas Eze, told Vanguard that the human rights activist were being detained for conducting themselves in an unruly manner and physically assaulting a police officer.
The DPO said his men investigated the prostitutes, after one of them had an issue with her male friend and then invited four of her colleagues to join her to deal with the man and probably extort money from him.
He said:
“After the fiasco, the man ran to the police station and reported a case of assault against his person and threat to his life.“We invited the prostitutes to the police station and took their statements. Surprisingly, two men came. One said he was a lawyer, the other one said he was a member of Civil Liberties Organization, CLO, and that that they came in respect of the matter.”
He said he told them that the matter had been resolved and that Police was following procedure. But that the men became unruly.
However, the activist, Justus Ijoma, who spoke from his hospital bed, said the DPO invited him to the police station when he called him from Awka on the matter
He said on reaching the station and notifying the DPO that the ladies were made to pay N15,000 each for bail, the DPO got angry and did not want to listen to them anymore.
He also alleged that the DPO ordered them out of his office and that as they made to leave, other policemen started beating them.
