Gov. Kashim Shettima of Borno has said that the ongoing teachers verification is responsible for the delay in payment of their two months’ salaries. The governor gave the explanation on Wednesday in Maiduguri at the launch of a free-feeding and uniform programme introduced by the government for schools in four councils as a pilot scheme.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that they are Jere, Biu and Monguno local government areas, and Maiduguri Metropolitan Council.

Shettima said the exercise was being done to ascertain the number of primary school teachers in the state and to fish out ghost workers.

He said the government had been able to save about N64 million as result of the exercise, adding that more than 200 ghost workers were discovered.

The governor solicited the understanding and support of the teachers.

He said the government was planning new special allowance for head teachers, reward for best teachers, as well as furniture and car loans to deserving teachers.

The governor said the feeding and uniform scheme was designed to cushion the hardship experienced by parents and guardians in the state.

“We are introducing this scheme in an effort to cushion the deep-rooted hardship faced by parents in the state”, he said.

He expressed his determination to reposition education and return the sector’s lost glory of the 70s.

Shettima said that the challenge of insurgency in the state had been a cog in the wheel of progress, and would be surmounted.

“Boko Haram has been an impediment to our social-economic development.

“The political terrain in the state was fiercely threatened with all arms of security outfit detailed to counter insurgency attacks.

“In the wake of all these, almost every sector of the state economy has been brought to a standstill”, he said.

Dr Moh’d El-Nur Dongel, the Chairman of the state Committee on Resuscitation of Primary School, commended the governor for his “genuine concern for education”. (NAN)
