A kidnap syndicate that had terrorised the Ijebu axis of Ogun State has been busted by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the state police command.

Crime and Security gathered that among the five suspects was an army officer, who is the kingpin of the syndicate, Akinyele Jaiyesinmi.
Other members arrested were Adeyinka Olusoji, Gbadamosi Dada, Taiwo Ayoola and Sulaiman Kalejaiye.

Jaiyesinmi, while speaking with Crime and Security, said he kidnapped the mother of a lawmaker in the state representing Odogbolu state constituency, Honourable Remmy Hassan, Mrs. Rachael Hassan, in Omu-Ijebu, some weeks back.

“I spend all the ransom collected from the families of my victims unwisely. I have no house and also I have no car. I live in a rented apartment with my family,” he said.

He also informed that he was dismissed from the army in 2004, adding that he collected N1m as ransom from the Hassan family before the old woman was released from captivity.

“We kidnapped a woman at Omu Ijebu and we collected N1m ransom. We kidnapped another man at Epe garage and collected N500, 000, while we also collected N1m from the relations of a man kidnapped at Ikangba.

“We kidnapped a woman at Imodi Imosan and another man at Idowa Ijebu; we collected N1m and N2m respectively from their relations,” he said.

The state Commissioner for Police, Ikemefuna Okoye, described the arrest of the suspects as one of the achievements of the command in the year, noting that the suspects were responsible for the series of kidnappings in the axis.

According to him, “They opened fire on our men when they got to their hideout. A shootout ensued and four members of the syndicate, including a woman, fell to the superior firepower of our men. But we were able to arrest five of them, while some others are still at large.

“From the confessions of the suspects, they were responsible for kidnapping the mother of a member of Ogun State House of Assembly, Mr. Remmy Hassan, Rachael, at Omu Ijebu, and they collected N1m ransom before she regained her freedom.”

Items recovered from the suspects were two operational vehicles, an Astra Opel and a Renault as well as arms and ammunition.ax
