As US disappoint, Nigeria to Now Buy Arms from Russia
After the recent impasse between the United States and Nigeria on arms purchase, Nigeria is now looking to purchase arms from Russia, reports say.
The Sun says that Russia is yet to agree to the nation's request. The Nigerian military is considering aerial attacks as the more fruitful M.O. as opposed to the use of infantry soldiers against the insurgents.
Aerial strikes have the advantage as it is not hampered by the ambush often sprung by insurgents during guerrilla warfare.
A delegation is now in Russia, negotiating the deal for the machines and equipment. Sources say that Nigeria will be purchasing war planes and helicopters among other equipment.
The source said: “The US has refused to sell arms and lethal equipment to Nigeria to prosecute the war against Boko Haram.
The US, instead, prefers to concentrate on assistance to Nigeria to consolidate its democracy.
We have had pilots trained in the US. We train our military pilots in the US. They come to Nigeria for conversion.
The Federal Government has no choice than to look elsewhere for war planes, helicopters and lethal equipment against Boko Haram insurgents.
We have opened up negotiation with Russia for arms bailout. We want to buy military hardwares from them.
