Nigeria back on the throne: Super Falcons defeats Cameroon 2-0 to win AWC title
The Super Falcons are the undisputed Queens of the continent after beating Cameroon 2-0 to win the 2014 African Women's Championship title in Namibia.
Nigeria has now won the competition for an unprecedented seventh time, more than any other team can match in Africa.
In fact only Equatorial Guinea have won the AWC title aside Nigeria, but it is the Super Falcons who won it more, going into the history books as the most successful nation in this competition.
Two goals in the first half from Desire Oparanozie and Asisat Oshoala made all the difference as the coach Edwin Okon's led team once again mounted the pinnacle of African women's football.
There has been some frailities in this Nigerian team all through the tournament, but they seemed to atone with their precision in front of goal.
Nigeria proved why they have been the best team all through the tournament, and a perfect blend of veterans like Perpetua Nkwocha with younger players like Oshoala, all helped to make Nigeria formidable once again.
The team did not lose any game all through, playing with a vendetta of intent, winning back the title.
Prior to the game, Nigeria's head to head record against Cameroon stood at : two draws, one win for Cameroon and five wins for the Super Falcons.
Cameroon, although did not show the Nigerians way too much respect, having a go at them, but it was just a matter of time before the Super Falcons got into their strides.
Nigeria's first goal was a product of good team effort and well worked routine, two players ran over the ball as Oparanozie belted in a free-kick to give her team the lead.
The goal took her tally to five goals in the tournament, but Oshoala still made sure she didn't cart away the highest goalscorer award, without being shared.
Two minutes before half-time,the Falconets star netted Nigeria's second of the night, notching up her fifth goal of the tournament.
There was no coming back for the Indomitable Lioness of Cameroon, who were pegged back by Nigeria.
And the Super Falcons soared high into the sky as they reclaimed a title they lost in 2012 to Equatorial Guinea.
Nigeria has so much dominated the AWC tournament that it is just theirs to lose, they only need to self destruct in order not to win it.....
